김종순의 그림은 단색으로 칠해진 화면이다. 캔버스 표면에 화선지를 20겹 정도 겹쳐 붙여나간 후에 그 위로 과슈(혹은 아크릴물감)를 먹여 넣은 그림이다. 물을 머금은 물감이 화선지의 내부를 적셔나간 상태가 우리가 보고 있는 그림이다. 다시 말해 우리의 눈으로 보고 있는 것, 그것이 ‘그림’이라는 애기다. 그림 안에 있는 구체적인 이미지가 아니라 눈으로 마주 하고 있는 것, 그 자체가 그림이라는 언급은 이미 모더니즘의 대표적인 담론이기도 하다. 이전에는 그림을 이루는 물질, 지지대에 불과한 것이 그 자체로 의미 있는 존재로 환생하며 의미 있는 것으로 부각된 것이 또한 현대미술이다. 따라서 현대미술은 납작한 평면의 화면, 천이나 종이 그 자체, 물감, 색, 붓질, 프레임 등이 회화를 이루는 핵심적인 조건이 되었다. 그리고 그것들을 개념적으로 사유하거나 그 성질을 이용해 연출하거나 하는 것이 미술의 중요한 문제로 대두되었다. 이는 물질에 대한 새로운 인식이며 인간중심적 사유방식에서 벗어나는 새로운 개안이기도 하다. 물질에 대한 물활론적인 사유이자 물질을 통해 상상하고 사유하기, 몽상하기에 해당하는 작업이고 물질을 인간의 이성아래 자리한 비천한 존재가 아니라 그 자체로 하나의 독립된 생명체로서 인식하는 일이기도 하다.

Kim Jong-soon's painting is the canvas colored in monochrome. It is a painting covered with 20 layers of Chinese drawing papers(Hwaseonji) and then dyed in Gouache (acrylic paint) on the top. What we are seeing is the water-holding paint which wets the inside of Chinese drawing papers(Hwaseonji). In other words, that is what we are seeing with our eyes, and that is 'a painting'. Not a specific image in the drawing but looking with eyes, itself is a painting and this saying is already a representative discourse of modernism. This is also modern art in which a matter that used to be a mere thing and support constituting a painting has been born to be a prominently meaningful existence itself. Therefore, in modern art, flat canvas, cloth or paper itself, paint, color, brush, and frame are major elements constituting a painting. And, thinking of them conceptually and expressing by using their property gains greater importance in art. This is new awareness and new enlightenment breaking from the way of human-centered thinking. This is the work of animistic thinking, imagining and thinking through matters, and dreaming, and it regards a matter itself as an independent creature, not an insignificant existence that is under human reason.
